Donny Schmit - Motocross

When this was orginally written, Bloomington, MN native, Donny Schmit, was widely considered the most accomplished motocross rider to come from Minnesota. Although his accomplishments may have been surpassed by other Minneosta riders, there is no doubt that he put Minnesota on the motocross map like it had never been before. His career, which started riding 80s at tracks like Cambridge and Grantsburg, included 125 SX and National wins, 125 and 250 GP wins, and three major championships. He rode for factory Suzuki in the late 80s and a variety of top-level teams at the GP level. His 15 GP wins are the most of any American.

A personal recollection of his 1987 Millville race can be found on this site. Also, this collection of stories about Donny, originally compiled by a group of people who knew him well, can also be found, re-printed on this site.
